Oklahoma Civil Service Tests
Oklahoma works on a Merit system, which is used to prevent nepotism, and ensures that employees are hired based on their qualifications. Due to this, many of the civil service positions with Oklahoma require pre-employment exams. The exams will vary greatly based on the position you are testing for.
- Written Test – The written tests will vary greatly based on the skills needed for the job. All tests are multiple-choice, and all though there is no time limit, in general, they take around 2 hours to complete. You may be tested on arithmetic, reading comprehension, office management, situational judgment, writing skills, memory, or any combination of these.
- Performance Test – For some positions, you will need to demonstrate that you have the skills to accomplish specific job-related tasks. This could be a physical exam like those required by the police department, a typing test, or a demonstration of programming.
- Supplemental Questionnaire – Some jobs evaluate candidates based on their experience and the information provided in a supplemental questionnaire. If this is what the position requires, it will be noted in the job description.
Interview
Interviews will be a combination of behavioral and situational. This will give the interviewers a better idea of how well your skills suit the qualifications. Being familiar with the STAR method of interviewing is beneficial. It allows you to expand on your answers to give the department heads a well-rounded view of how you will behave as an employee. They will be looking for adaptability, professionalism, and good judgment.
How to Prepare for Oklahoma’s Civil Service Exam?
Preparing for the civil service exams starts with reading the job description. The job description will give you a good idea of which skills you need to focus on to study for the exams. If there are any skills that are required, that you have not used for a while, focus on developing these. If you suffer from test anxiety, find a way to simulate test-taking to help decrease this. The written tests are not timed, so when taking the exams, take the time you need. Try to focus on accuracy rather than speed. On the day of the test, do not forget to bring any required materials, such as your identification, or you will not be allowed to take the exam. Overall, stay calm and focused. If you have practiced, you can be confident of receiving an acceptable score on the exams, and eventually a job offer.
