What Is DHL’s Hiring Process?

DHL makes the application process simple and has an extremely comprehensive website. The first step is to create an account and fill out an online application. Applications completed online will be saved for 24 months, per the German Data Protection Act. Applications can, in some circumstances, be accepted through the mail, but the company stresses their preference is for job-seekers to apply online. A cover letter should be submitted with the application. This serves as your opportunity to introduce yourself to the company and grab their attention. After the application is reviewed, an on-line pre-employment aptitude test is required. Depending on the location and the position, the next step may be a phone or online interview. Some positions may go directly to a personal interview. If the applicant impresses with the interviews, the next stage is the assessment center. Finally, if the applicant makes it through, the final step is onboarding. Paper-work will be filled out and contracts will be signed.

What Are The DHL Online Assessment Tests?

DHL has its applicants take a series of psychometric tests prior to offering interviews. Some are general competency and situational tests, while others are tailored specifically to the position for which you are applying.

  • Situational Judgement Test (SJT)
The SJT tests the job candidate’s ability to handle situations that they may encounter in their job. It helps determine the problem-solving skills of the applicant. The questions are presented in a multiple-choice format, and you answer which of the problem-solving options you are most likely to perform.
  • Numerical Reasoning Test
The numerical reasoning exam screens your ability to extrapolate data from graphs and charts and answer related questions. This test is also multiple choice.
  • Verbal Reasoning Test
The verbal aptitude tests your use of logic and critical thinking. You will be provided with a paragraph to read, and a series of questions based on it. Some are multiple-choice, and some are true and false. This gives the company a general idea of your deductive reasoning skills.
  • Logical Reasoning Test
The logical reasoning test assesses your ability to use logic to work through problems.
It tests your nonverbal deductive reasoning skills, by using images and diagrams. It requires you to be able to interpret patterns or manipulate shapes.
  • Personality Test
The personality test measures your interpersonal communication skills. This test is used to determine how well you fit into the corporate culture and work with other people.

DHL’s Phone/Online Interview

Based on the job you’re applying for and your location the next step may be a phone or online interview. A phone interview if fairly informal, and is used as another way to get a better understanding of who you are and your abilities. An online interview is similar, however, you will not be speaking to a person. An online interview is pre-recorded and sent to the human resources team.

Personal Interview

The personal interview will be conducted by the hiring manager or human resources. By now they will have an idea of your personality and will be going more in-depth into your job experience, and skill set. Be prepared for questions like:

  • “What do you know about the company?”
  • “We prefer those with industry knowledge, can you tell me more about___?”
  • “How will you handle competitors that offer cheaper options, how will you handle this with potential customers?”

DHL’s Assessment Center

Some positions require attendance at an assessment center. There you will do group exercises, and demonstrate your team working skills. In some cases, a group presentation will be asked for.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet company leaders.

What Are DHL’s Core Values?

The values DHL is committed to are as stated by the company itself:

“Delivering excellent quality. Making the customer successful. To foster openness. To set and follow clear priorities. To be entrepreneurial. To be socially responsible. To act with integrity.”

Keep these values in mind when submitting an application to DHL. They have stayed an industry leader by remaining committed to their customers and employees.

Understanding their corporate culture, vision, and mission statement is a great start to being prepared for their hiring process. Good luck, and happy job hunting.
