What Is Allied Universal?

The product of a merger between AlliedBarton, and Universal Services of America in 2016, Allied Universal has two headquarters in Conshohocken, PA, and Santa Ana. CA. They are the largest provider of security guards in the world and are the third largest U.S based employer.

Allied Universal currently has a workforce of 800,000 employees. They hire in several different areas of security. Armed security, event security, and security officer are the security areas they specialize in.  In addition to positions for security personnel they also have careers in the areas of risk assessment and  investigation, corporate support sales and leadership, technology services. What Is the Recruitment Process at Allied Universal?

The Allied Universal hiring process starts with the application. You can apply online or at one of its security offices. If you are applying online you can search by location and job title to find the position that you are hoping for. If you don’t find it right away, you can sign up to receive job alerts. You can specify your preferred job and the area you are looking in. You can also watch the careers website to find out about hiring events near you.

If your application passes review you will be contacted to schedule a telephone screening. In some cases the screening will be skipped and you will proceed directly to an in-person or virtual interview.

Some positions may use psychometric testing as a way to help narrow the list of potential candidates. This usually consists of a combination of cognitive tests and personality assessments. These are used to determine who will be able to learn their position quickly, fit into the company culture, and perform their duties well.

Hiring is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, and a drug test.

Jobs in security require quick responses, good judgment, and good reasoning skills. If you are asked to take any assessment tests these are separate from the tests required for security licensing. Since training is paid, they want to ensure that the individuals they are training are worthwhile investments. Non-security positions may also require psychometric testing. You will be kept informed of each step as you move along in the hiring process.

 

These are a few of the tests commonly used in the security industry.

  • Situational Judgment Test (SJT) This test shows how you respond to workplace difficulties. You will have to decide the best way to handle different situations that may occur on the job. You will have several options to choose from, and will either be asked to rank them from the best to the worst way or select the answer that is closest to how you would handle the problem.
  • Personality SurveyPersonality surveys are given to give the company a picture of who you are. The questions give insight into your morals, positive traits, and negative traits.
  • Verbal ReasoningVerbal reasoning is how well you can read something and draw logical conclusions with the information you have available. This test is made up of short paragraphs followed by either multiple-choice, or true or false questions. To add to the difficulty, the verbal reasoning test is timed, so you will have to manage the time you spend on each question wisely.
  • Abstract ReasoningThis test shows how well you can use logic when words or numbers are not involved. Instead, you will be using pattern recognition. Each question is a series of shapes that change according to its own set of rules. You need to be able to decipher the pattern in the way the shapes change and find the missing piece. This test is timed, and multiple-choice.
  • Numerical Reasoning Numerical reasoning tests assess your ability to work with numbers and interpret data to solve problems. They typically include questions involving basic arithmetic, percentages, ratios, and interpreting graphs or tables. These tests are designed to evaluate how well you can analyze quantitative information under timed conditions, often simulating real-world tasks you might encounter in a job.

 

How to Prepare for Allied Universal’s Assessments?

Go into the hiring process ready to leave a good impression at every stage. Your performance on the psychometric tests can be the difference between a new career, and going back to the beginning. Learn as much as you can about the company and the position so you understand how they like things done, and can make informed decisions on the situational judgment test. Verbal reasoning can be practiced just by reading a magazine article. To make practice even more effective you can write some questions out beforehand and quiz yourself. Abstract reasoning can be practiced using crosswords and other puzzles, especially anything involving patterns. Studying will help you ace the tests and show that you are serious about your new career.
