Aptitude Employment Tests Prep

What Is 7-Eleven?

Started as ice-house storefronts that sold bread and milk in 1927, rebranding as Tote’m stores in 1928, 7-Eleven is a Japanese-American convenience store. The name 7-11 was adopted in 1946 to reflect the operating hours of the time. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, majority shares were acquired by Japanese company Ito-Yokado in 1991. There are over 68,236 7-Eleven convenience stores located in 17 countries. 7-Eleven has job opportunities for people of all skill levels, from corporate positions to store clerks. They are a military-friendly employer and support a number of veterans initiatives. They have a number of benefits they offer to full-time employees, including:

  • Healthcare plans
  • Dental coverage
  • Adoption assistance
  • Profit-sharing plans

What Is 7-Eleven Hiring Process?

Application

Applications for employment can be found online, with the job listings divided into sections for Support, Corporate, and Store/Restaurant roles to make searching for specific positions easier. If you are applying to open a franchise, this will also be completed online. You will be asked to upload your resume and cover letter at the same time you fill out the application.

Telephone Interview

The telephone interview is reserved for those applying for support or corporate positions, and those who have applied to open a franchise. If your application is accepted, you will be called for a telephone interview with a member of human resources. This interview will touch upon the skill listed on your resume and your work experience. They will want to know about any customer service experience you have and what your goals are. They may ask questions about your education and your course of study.

7-Eleven’s Online Assessment Tests

Those applying to open a franchise will be required to take several online assessment tests to determine their suitability. They only want to give franchises to candidates who demonstrate business knowledge and drive to help uphold the 7-Eleven standards. The assessment tests you must take before being approved to open a franchise are:

  • Business Leadership Inventory – You will be sent an email invitation to take this test. The BLI is a psychometric personality test used to measure your leadership skills. This test is un-proctored and will be taken online.
  • Business Acumen Evaluation – The business acumen test is an assessment test designed to test your financial literacy and understanding of how businesses make money. This exam is proctored and will be taken by appointment in an office.

Other Testing

Those applying for roles with-in a store will be required to take a basic math test. This test will be given on the same day as the face to face interview. Rather than being online, it will be given using paper and a pencil, which will be provided. The purpose is to ensure that anyone going into a role in which they will be required to handle money and count change, is able to perform basic arithmetic functions.

Face to Face Interview

Your final step toward the end of the hiring process is the face to face interview. 7-Eleven conducts more laid back, conversational style interviews. Answering questions using the STAR (situation, task, answer, response) method is the best way to fully answer questions and let your personality shine through. Many of the questions will be customer service focused, and you will want to highlight these skills. Some questions you can anticipate in the interview are:

  • What is your favorite part of working in customer service?
  • What do you think you bring to the table from your past job experiences?
  • Do you have a vision of where you would like to see your career go in the next five years?
  • What appeals to you about working for 7-Eleven?

How to Prepare for 7-Eleven’s Tests? (Franchise Applicants)

For those wishing to open a franchise, preparing for the online assessment tests is essential. Before allowing you to purchase a franchise, you must demonstrate that you have the basic skill needed to take over a store and be successful. Study 7-Eleven and their corporate values and business strategy. This will help you understand what they are looking for in their leaders and their store owner/operators. The initial leadership evaluation is done at home. Make sure your device has good connectivity and that you are in a place free of distractions. If you are not familiar with business strategy or financial literacy, it is very important that you educate yourself on these topics. An inadequate score on the Business Acumen exam will disqualify you. Passing the online evaluations will prove to the corporation that you have what it takes to become part of the 7-11 team.
